Flying by Feeling: Communicating Flight Envelope Protection through Haptic Feedback

چکیده
Modern aircraft can be equipped with a flight envelope protection system: automation which modifies pilot control inputs to ensure that the remains within allowable limits. Overruling may lead mode confusion, even when visual or auditory feedback is provided alert pilots. We advocate using active devices make system tangible pilot. This paper presents main findings of an evaluation three haptic designs for protection. The first concept used both force and vibro-tactile alerts, producing promising, yet inconclusive, results. second asymmetric vibrations give directional alerting cues, did not result in improved performance on initial use, but yield learning rate task. third employed physically guide away from limits, yielded safety improvements created dependence: degraded immediately after was removed. From this, we advise use during training excursions, leverage interfaces providing operation, reevaluate combination combine their advantages single-pilot operations.

Communicating Emotion Through a Haptic Link
The world is more and more connected and yet we are often physically distant from people we care about. Technology increasingly supports remote interpersonal communication but has yet to integrate our sense of touch into this interaction. Researchers in the field of haptics (touch and technology) have started exploring computer-mediated touch interaction. The question is how should a computer-m...
متن کاملCommunicating with Feeling
Communication between users in shared editors takes place in a deprived environment – distributed users find it difficult to communicate. While many solutions to the problems this causes have been suggested this paper presents a novel one. It describes one possible use of haptics as a channel for communication between users. User’s telepointers are considered as haptic avatars and interactions ...

Story listening contributes greatly to children’s development, and much research has explored different modalities of story listening in children. However, few studies have utilized haptic sensory input. In the present 2-session study, we implemented a haptic vest that generates haptic sensations on a child’s back as he or she listens to stories. In the first session, child participants rated h...
متن کاملFeeling a rigid virtual world through an impulsive haptic display
In this paper the first haptic display capable of applying a true impulse to the operator is presented. The applied impulse results in an immediate change of the user’s momentum. Such a change is considered to be invaluable in making interactions with rigid virtual objects feel realistic. Conventional methods can only approximate impulses by outputting a constant force over a certain number of ...
